Blue Brain: Computer Simulation of the Neocortex

A group of neuroscientists, computer specialists and statisticians, amongst others, are creating the most detailed simulation ever of brain function. The Blue Brain project aims to simulate 8,000 neurons that make up a neocortical column (left) – a fundamental building block of the most complicated part of mammalian brains: the neocortex.

The preparatory work has been going on for the last ten years as Professor Henry Markram and his team have been collecting data about the physiology and communication of neurons in the neocortical column. From the stage they are at now the project’s architects expect it to take a further ten years to build their brain simulation.
