Go for those things that cost nothing - days spent with family - walking trips - getting together with long lost friends - writing blogs. Above all, don't imagine you have to spend to live - that is the curse of our world - and, unfortunately, the characteristic of our lives upon which that Holy Grail of modern thought - economic growth, is predicated.
Thanks

I use to blow money out the cazoo!I think as we age we start to understand why our Dad alway's walked around the house turning off the light's.
I was thinking just today that if i had to i could pawn my watch...i could never do that with a meal, that i enjoyed or not...im thinking about buying tangible's more and more, just make's cent's lol

The nice thing, especially in today's economy, is that you can create your own experience without having to go out and buy it. But the great retailers are the ones who get that it's all about the experience. A great resource on this topic is the book "The Experience Economy" by Pine and Gilmore.

It looks like a research to tell us what kind of purchases mean more to us than others

Mixing the experiential element to a material purchase can be a powerful combination. In many ways that's what a meal out is, you can buy a burger at McDonalds sit in let the kids play in their jungle gymn spending time with family and experience the brand...while eating the item you've purchased. Oh and if you get a Happy Meal your kids will walk out with a material object to keep the happiness alive at home. A better example is the shopping experience at Anthropology where the atmosphere and treasure trove approach to merchandising adds much more value to the merchandise you would purchase and not pay such high prices for at a lesser clothing store. Good food for thought thank you.

David, you're right and the authors discuss this very point. Purchases clearly vary on a continuum from all possession, no experience to all experience no possession. We'll have to wait for future research to tease out the subtleties you allude to.

If I buy a bike that lets me go on long rides in the country, am I buying an experience?

What about a shirt that gets me compliments every where that I go?

Nice review, only, it's the Journal of Consumer Research, not the Journal of Consumer Psychology :-)
