I live in turkey where it is nearly always sunny and when I return to England where as we all know there is quite a bit of dismal weather my mood is not made worse. A simple example. Many link depression to weather but actually weather can only affect you if you are already feeling down, wouldn't you agree?

Agree with Tom. Maybe in the long run, in average, weather does not affect mood. But think about this: after a week of rain, finally shiny day comes with mild wind, which is not rare in spring in my country, I think people really become happier. the other thing is mood is really a very complex construct, affected by lots of factors. Those other factors are much more influntial and make weather neglectable.

I think they're testing the wrong hypothesis. Day to day changes in weather probably don't have any effect on mood. After all, a sudden downpour can be fun. But when it comes to February, and it as been dark, gloomy cold and and miserable for 3 months, and you've been stuck inside. Well, that's when mood is likely to change.

I would like to see how average mood differs in February vs July. I would also like to see how mood differs between good summers and bad.

I think in British culture especially, it has just become a custom to moan about the weather and like you say, it has given a feeling that we are always depressed when it rains. Travis even sang about it!

Are there any studies on how the weather affects people who are clinically depressed?

as usual - great post. it's really fascinating to watch psychologists taking on the explanatory systems we live by, even if they seem banal. cheers.
