I think I'd have to add that just having enough energy to DO these things makes me happy. I agree with Brad to an extent. I feel happy in my AP English class, despite the amount of stress and work I have to do for it. While it is 'painful,' it is not a physical pain. I believe that happiness is not just the rational judgment of physical conditions, but challenging ones, whether they be physical, mental, or emotional.

I wonder about computer games and films. These can be done in groups, like going to the cinema, and the competitive edge of multiplayer gaming certainly is fun.

Anon, it's a good point although I think partying is probably code for drinking, dancing and so on (we are talking about college students here, so it's not exactly dinner parties). The social affiliation category is referring more to helping others or in depth interactions.

I don't understand, partying doesn't increase happiness but social affiliation does? Isn't partying a way to socialize?

Interesting post overall though.

I have observed my son in physical pain and emotional stress while wrestling and realize he is enjoying every moment. Enjoyment is spiritual, contentment is emotional, but happiness is rational judgment of physical conditions. So what people are can be very different than what they think/know. I try to suggest being content and enjoying life is more important than asking (myself) if I'm happy. Happy may be as obsolete as the gold standard.
