The study's been superseded somewhat by the working memory model, which shows that phonological short term memory has a time based capacity of around 2 seconds - about the time taken to say about seven English digits quickly! However. this was a ground breaking study that was instrumental in the birth of cognitive psychology, and deserves to be honoured. I just wish people would stop quoting the result!

In the lab where I'm working we doign research on visual short-term memory (VSTM), the limit is around 4. But, it's a really short memory, well under the short-term memory studied by Miller !
