And if we have a deterministic view of existence? Sartre's conception of the consciousness was so badly flawed that I'm surprised he was quoted.

After all, to have the possibility of 'choice' - to be capable of a judgement that is unaffected by environment - there has to be an uncrossable barrier between that part of us and the rest of existence, and if that was possible, then the judgement we could make could not cross back to influence our actions within the rest of existence. I don't subscribe, I'm afraid. However, I do think homo sapiens muddles along as individuals far better believing they have choice on an ad hoc basis.

The scientific data is lacking because a Unified Theory of Emotion (now at www.surfyoursoul.com ) has been lacking. The theory needs to be tested: pure fear (vibration) is adrenaline; pure sadness (stillness or slowness)is serotonin; pure anger (tension or tightening) is norepinephrine; pure happiness (or momentum, wave energy) is dopamine.

Sharon

I was hoping to read about the physical/chemical reasons why we have our emotions. Of course we have complete control over our behavior and actions. But there are chemical reasons behind why we feel the way we feel. I am disappionted in the lack of scientific facts behind this article.

Nikeroo, there are psychological techniques for controlling emotions that may work in some circumstances. The ones to use depend on the nature of the undesired response they are addressing. These kinds of techniques are explained in many self-help books and are in widespread use by therapists.

The theories and studies are useful but where is the control mechanism and the studies to show they work??

If we have control then there must be steps we can take to realise it? I would be interested in reading something about this.
