Neil Strauss is the author of The Game: Undercover in the Secret Society of Pick-up Artists which is sure to produce disgusted reviews like this one in The Independent. It describes how AFCs - average frustrated chumps - can turn themselves into PUAs - pick up artists. Many of the techniques used are based on neuro-linguistic programming, which, in this context, is perhaps most usefully likened to hypnosis. It's all about influencing another person by learning how to manipulate all their senses to produce a change in their beliefs or behaviours.
If you've ever seen the 'mentalist' Derren Brown in action then you know how powerful some of these techniques can be.

what about us women who want to pick up men?
I wonder if these techniques really work or if it is just a way to get a book published. I took an early workshop from Bandler and Grinder and to me it seemed like old wine in new bottles

Pyschology is one of things that interests me.
The simple turth is its not all that hard, either way.
I think what worries me is when I sit on a bus and all I hear is "men are stupid" then a hushed voiced somewhere else "women are stupid".

As far as I know, NLP in controlled studies has not faired well. It is on the quack list (google) as a fiction based quackery with little evidence to suggest it might be effective and a larger body suggesting it is not effective.
Flipping the attraction switches in a female human being does not require nlp nor is nlp useful in this process.
I find it interesting that when I read the book I took it as more of a cautionary tale than anything. But almost every review I've read trashes the book because it's supposedly a "how to" guide. (Bias anyone?) The book was about 20% "how to" and the rest was really more about how the guy got caught up in the whole pickup community.
He also talks about NLP, if I can recall an exact quote about it, "(NLP) was useful for hypnotizing girls into getting groped in bars but it wasn't getting me any girlfriends". So it works, sort of, but in the long wrong it doesn't.
